Juinkye (Kyle) Chiang Selected as 2026 Syracuse University Scholar

Juinkye (Kyle) Chiang has been named one of 12 University Scholars, the highest undergraduate honor the University awards.

Juinkye (Kyle) Chiang '26 (B.Arch) Juinkye (Kyle) Chiang ’26 (B.Arch)University Scholars are selected each year by a universitywide faculty committee using criteria that include coursework and academic achievement, independent research and creative work, evidence of intellectual growth or innovation in their disciplinary field, a personal statement, and faculty letters of recommendation.

Juinkye (Kyle) Chiang ’26 is pursuing a major in architecture (B.Arch) and a minor in real estate and is a member of the Renée Crown University Honors Program.

Chiang’s academic excellence is matched by his intellectual curiosity and commitment to advancing architectural knowledge. He has earned repeated recognition as a Dean’s List student, Dean’s Scholar and Success Scholar, and was an Integrated Design Studio award winner. Outside of studio, he has also participated in multiple design competitions, furthering knowledge gained in the classroom. Chiang’s participation in off-campus study programs in New York City and Florence reflects a sophisticated ability to synthesize architectural theory, urban history, and contemporary practice across diverse cultural contexts.

Chiang’s directed research project stems from his time in Florence, as he continues research into the legacy of water dispossession in Sicily, exacerbated by climate change. Using the region as a representative example of drought-affected territories, he is developing strategies aimed at fostering resource autonomy amid an increasingly urgent climate crisis and the privatization of essential resources. This approach is rooted in his academic experience: “My time at the School of Architecture has taught me how to use design as a tool to critically assess the ways in which we inhabit the Earth and devise responsible futures,” he says.

Beyond his individual accomplishments, Chiang has made meaningful and sustained contributions to the academic environment of the School of Architecture. As a second- and third-year studio Undergraduate Program Associate, Architecture Ambassador, Peer Advisor, and member of the Student Mentor Squad, he has provided technical guidance, design feedback, and mentorship to fellow students, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and intellectually rigorous studio culture. His leadership extends into residential life as a Resident Advisor, where he supports student well-being and academic engagement beyond the classroom.

Chiang is also deeply committed to strengthening the intellectual and professional life of the School through service and communication. His involvement with Alpha Rho Chi and Asian Students in America, along with his roles as a student assistant for the social media team and the King + King Architecture Library, demonstrates his dedication to community building, representation, and the dissemination of architectural ideas. Reflecting on these efforts, Chiang notes, “I hope that my involvement in the university has contributed to a student community that acts both out of passion for our craft and care for those around us.”

Complementing his academic experience, Chiang has extended his experimental and curious approach into professional practice through a shadowship at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and internships with Perkins Eastman, Brookfield Properties, and Cuningham, where he also served as a part-time design technology research intern during the academic year. Across these roles, he introduced innovative software workflows to support sustainable design and real estate strategies, with a focus on clearly communicating design’s ecological priorities to stakeholders beyond the discipline.

“It is a complete honor to be selected as a University Scholar, which I owe to my peers and instructors who have pushed me to approach the world’s issues with continued curiosity and rigor,” says Chiang.

After graduation, Chiang will be joining an architecture practice in New York City.

Congratulations, Kyle!
