Professor of Architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)

Herwig Baumgartner is a licensed architect and principal of Baumgartner Architects, a Los Angeles–based firm recognized internationally for operating at the forefront of contemporary design. His practice merges advanced design technologies and material innovation, exploring new spatial paradigms that challenge and expand the boundaries of architectural design.
He received a diploma in Music and New Media from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and earned a Master of Architecture from the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

Baumgartner has taught and lectured extensively both in the United States and internationally, with visiting studio appointments at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Applied Arts Vienna (die Angewandte), and Monterrey University in Mexico. Since 2007, he has been a Professor of Architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), where he teaches advanced design studios and leads the institution’s design technology and robotics department.

Baumgartner’s work has been exhibited at leading cultural institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), the Cultural Forum (New York), the FRAC Centre-Val de Loire (France), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Architecture and Design Museum (Los Angeles), the SITE gallery Santa Fe (New Mexico), and the Venice Architecture Biennale (Italy).

He has been recognized as one of the world’s top 50 innovators in architecture and design by the publication 50 Under 50. His projects have been extensively published in hundreds of international books, magazines, and newspapers, including two monographs, and have been featured in numerous television and radio interviews.

Baumgartner has received numerous awards, most recently the Blueprint magazine Award for Best Innovative Design Project, an A+ Award for Sustainability, a COLA Fellowship from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, and the AIA Next LA Merit Award.
