Syracuse Architecture Emeritus Professor Arthur “Art” McDonald passed away in mid-August. Professor McDonald was among the most revered and influential professors to teach at Syracuse Architecture.
After several years of professional practice as a registered architect in New York City, he joined the faculty of Syracuse Architecture in 1974. He served as head of the undergraduate program at Syracuse Architecture from 1982 to 1989, chair of the graduate program from 1996 to 2002, and as interim dean from 2002 to 2004.
McDonald’s teaching and research interests were in architectural and urban design, urban housing, the history and theory of urban planning, and the theoretical underpinnings of the modern movement.
McDonald retired at the end of the fall 2015 semester following more than 40 years of service to the school. He continued to practice architecture in Syracuse from 1979 onward.
We will celebrate the life and work of Professor McDonald later in the semester. At this time our thoughts are with his family.
