Matthew Herman

Open ARC 409/607 lecture

Matthew Herman leads BuroHappold’s Chicago office and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the MEP and Environmental design teams. He has worked on a variety of projects providing project management and coordination for MEP strategies and environmental design. Matthew’s specialty is low energy design and energy analysis including energy modeling, post occupancy monitoring, and life cycle assessment for existing buildings and new construction.

He has experience working with clients and design teams during all phases of development, construction, and operations. Matthew has led projects ranging in scale from system component design to masterplanning and has worked on projects such as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, PNC Bank Headquarters in Pittsburgh, United States Institute of Peace in Washington, DC, and the Hawaii Preparatory Academy, which is one of only three projects to have been certified under the Living Building Challenge program.

Matthew Herman will be presenting a lecture on how building physics and system integration is used to inform the design process and operation of the built environment.  His talk will bridge from the nano-scale to the urban scale as he discusses recent projects that use environmental performance and systems thinking as part of an integrated design process.
