James Westcott: Elements of Architecture

In this lecture, James Westcott, editor OMA / AMO will discuss Rem Koolhaas’s new book for TaschenElements of Architecture.

Elements of Architecture, is somewhere between an incomplete encyclopedia and a paranoiac’s scrapbook. Over 2,524 pages, we look at architecture’s smallest component parts—floor, door, wall, ceiling, roof, toilet, fireplace, etc.—in an attempt to decode the histories, innovations, acculturation, and bureaucracy hidden everywhere in our built environment, from the Paleolithic to the present, to possible futures…

Tracing these lineages, the book uncovers how we arrived at the versions of the elements widely accepted today, and the roads not taken – elemental practices that could have created a radically different “normal.”
