A Case for Geo-Design
Geo-Design is an attempt by design to reach out beyond its disciplinary boundaries to embrace new problems, using both traditional and novel methods and media, contributing to an interdisciplinary approach of understanding the world. Geo-Design, or “designing with the Earth,” may be a way to interweave the classical definition of design—its composing of self-contained objects—with awareness of the expanded context of feedback loops, emergence, and complexity that uproot the cognitive, ecological, and ethical foundations of designed action and its objects. This talk will combine insights from Metahaven’s practice as filmmakers, writers, designers, and artists with thoughts around the Geo-Design MA programme at DAE, which they have been heading since September 2023.
