Rebecca Carrai


Dr. Rebecca Carrai is an architectural and design historian. She currently serves as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max Planck, within the Lise Meitner Group “Coded Objects.” She is the co-chair of the EAHN Interest Group, “Building Word Image,” where she fosters discourse on media and objects, with a focus on their reciprocal and spatial relationships. She holds a Ph.D. in Architectural History from KU Leuven’s Faculty of Architecture. Her dissertation examined global domestic interiors through the lens of IKEA, the world’s largest furnishing company. Her research broadly explores the intersection of capitalism and architecture, covering interior design, material culture, media studies, and anthropology. She has been a visiting scholar at Princeton University (2023), KTH, Stockholm (2022), and the Architectural Association, London (2019-2021), where she co-led the summer school “AAVS Think Tank.” Outside of academia, she served as an editor for Area and contributed to exhibition designs, including a forthcoming show in collaboration with the Design Museum Brussels and “Rethinking Retirement,” presented during the 26th Biennale of Ljubljana.
