Richard Gluckman ’70, FAIA, is Founder and Principal of Gluckman Tang Architects, based in New York City. Since establishing his architectural practice in 1977, Mr. Gluckman has closely aligned his work with the world of art and design, creating distinctive spaces for numerous art galleries and museums, and developing installations with contemporary artists including Larry Gagosian, Andrea Rosen, Paula Cooper, Mary Boone, and Roland Augustine as well as assisted numerous artists like Jenny Holzer, Richard Serra, Dan Flavin, and Robert Wilson and Francesco Clemente on their installations.

Notable projects include the Museo Picasso Malaga, Malaga, Spain (2004); Mori Arts Center, Tokyo, Japan (2003); Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and Study Center, Santa Fe, NM (1997 and 2001); the renovation of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1995-1998); The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA (1994); and Dia Center for the Arts, New York, NY (1987). Recent and current work includes The Warehouse, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY (2006); renovation and an addition to the Santa Fe Railroad Depot for the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, San Diego, CA (scheduled completion 2006); and a 150,000-square-foot facility for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA, the Perelman Building, a new annex of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, on which he is currently putting the finishing touches. (It’s funded by Raymond Perelman, Ron Perelman’s dad.) In 2005 Gluckman wrapped up his first major condo project, One Kenmare Square, Andre Balazs’s curvy condo building in SoHo. He’s also at work on a $21.5 million renovation of the Cooper Hewitt on Fifth Avenue and a proposal for the Contemporary Art Museum in San Francisco, funded by Gap founder Don Fisher. His design aesthetic has also been applied to posh retail venues (Helmut Lang, Gianni Versace, Yves Saint Laurent). Even those who tap him for residential commissions tend to have art-world ties, such as gallerist Marianne Boesky and French billionaire François Pinault.

Gluckman has been a visiting critic and lecturer at universities including Harvard, Columbia, and Syracuse, and he currently chairs the Advisory Board of the Syracuse University School of Architecture. Recent awards include the National Design Award, an AIA National Honor Award, two Merit Awards from the AIA NYC, and the Arents Award from Syracuse University. A monograph, Space Framed: Richard Gluckman Architect, was published by The Monacelli Press in 2000. Mr. Gluckman received his bachelor of architecture (’70) and master of architecture (’71) from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY.
