Trial and Error

Trial and Error is a tool of practice that gave birth to the first issue of DISTIGMO magazine—an issue that is itself titled, “Trial and Error.” With this selfreferential gesture, the concept is understood not only as a process but also as an instrument. It reflects a mode of practice driven by the possibility of mistake and the potential of what error can uncover. In Greek, the word for error—láthos (λάθος)—also implies a hidden meaning or deviation from the expected path. In this light, the mistake becomes an agent, actively shaping the act of making. The lecture will reflect on how this methodology informed DISTIGMO, proposing that mistakes are tools that reveal unexpected outcomes and guide practice through uncertainty, doubt, and experimentation.
