Rewriting Exurbia: New People in Aging Sprawl

Rewriting Exurbia: New People in Aging Sprawl by Lawrence C. Davis (ListLab Editore, 2024) examines the transformative potential of aging postwar suburban sprawl, driven by the influx of new cultures and their unique spatial practices. Through a detailed exploration of these changes, Davis highlights design and planning strategies such as hyperlocal zoning, increased residential density, a broader mix of functions, and shared community spaces. This design research builds on the recent work of scholars, writers, and advocates who envision a future for suburban sprawl that harnesses its cultural diversity to foster inclusivity, strengthen local identities, and promote economic, ecological, and social well-being.
