The Kermit J. Lee Jr. Endowed Scholarship was established in 1997 to honor Professor Emeritus Kermit J. Lee Jr. ’57. Former dean Bruce Abbey, along with students and alumni, created the scholarship to provide the School’s most promising students with financial support to complete their degrees and join the ranks of successful Syracuse alumni in the profession.

The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student during their third and subsequent years of study. Eligible students must exhibit financial need and maintain a minimum GPA while also “demonstrating the qualities of professional promise, leadership, inventiveness and service embodied by Professor Emeritus Kermit J. Lee Jr.”

The fund reached its endowment goal in 2019 with the first scholarship awarded in Fall 2019.

Kermit J. Lee Jr.

Beloved professor, and accomplished architect, Professor Emeritus Kermit J. Lee Jr. (BArch ’57), passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Professor Lee was an accomplished architect and creative thinker, a much-loved professor with a loyal following, and a generous and dynamic colleague. After earning a graduate degree in Braunschweig, Germany, and practicing in Switzerland, he returned to Syracuse as a faculty member in 1968 and served until his retirement in 1995, earning many professional honors over the course of his career. He had a significant and important impact on his students and colleagues and maintained relationships with generations of alumni of the School. As one of the first Black graduates of the School of Architecture, he was particularly proud of his mentoring role for minority students.

The banner images on this page were compiled for an exhibit on display at the memorial celebration held in Slocum Hall in October 2018. The celebration featured recollections of Kermit by alumni, current and past faculty members, family and friends, near and far.
