Yuyang Liu is the founder and principal of the Shanghai-based studio Atelier Liu Yuyang. Since founding Atelier Liu Yuyang in Shanghai in 2007, Liu has established the studio as a leading voice in the architectural field, earning acclaim both within China and internationally. The studio is known for its diverse portfolio, which spans pragmatic industrial and infrastructure projects to intricate architectural, landscape, and urban designs. Atelier Liu Yuyang is celebrated for its ability to craft unique architectural narratives, transcending projects into a poetic synthesis of place and purpose.
Liu is a distinguished architect whose career embodies a unique blend of global perspective and local experience. His work has garnered significant attention in leading architectural publications, including A+U, Domus, Casabella, Detail, Wallpaper*, and Architectural Record. His projects have also been featured in prominent regional design journals across East Asia, South America, Central and Eastern Europe. Liu has also made substantial contributions to architectural education through teaching roles at esteemed institutions including the University of Hong Kong, University of Southern California, Tongji University and most recent Syracuse University. He has lectured and conducted workshops at ETH Zurich, Politecnico Milano, Technical University of Berlin, National University of Singapore, Korea National University of Arts, Tunghai University, London Metropolitan University, as well as all major architectural schools in China. Balancing practice and acdemia, Liu has been invited as as curator, exhibition designer and exhibitor for various leading exhibitions including the International Architectural Exhibition of La Biennale Di Venezia and Shenzhen Biennale and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Bi-annual Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism.
Born in Taiwan and educated in the United States, Liu earned his Master of Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a B.A. in Urban Studies and Planning from the University of California, San Diego. At Harvard, Liu conducted his thesis under the mentorship of Professor Rem Koolhaas and co-authored the groundbreaking publication Great Leap Forward (Taschen, 2001), a seminal work exploring the urbanization of China’s Pearl River Delta.
