This issue marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China and explores the emerging wave of unconventional architects in China, offering a comprehensive look at these pioneering figures, who are reshaping the Chinese architectural landscape.
Reflecting on China’s rapid urban development and its current transition toward a more refined architectural industry, Wang notes, “As urbanization slows, a new breed of architects in China is pushing the boundaries of conventional design, embracing diversity across development, design, management, and the industry as a whole.”
The publication features a foreword by architectural critic and educator Dean Michael Speaks, titled The Blur of Practice. In his essay, Speaks redefines the identity of the contemporary architect, exploring the intricate relationships between design, technology, and media.
The book is a compilation of essays, dialogues, and projects by 23 unconventional Chinese architects under the themes “Design and Beyond,” “Technology and Beyond,” and “Media and Beyond.” Among the contributors are Syracuse Architecture Visiting Critics Li Han and Hu Yan (Drawing Architecture Studio), Wang Zigeng (PILLS), Ju Bin (Horizontal Design), Ma Yuanrong (GEIJOENG), Yin Yujun (Atelier of Alternative Architecture), and guest lecturers and reviewers Wang Zhenfei and Wang Luming (FUN), Li Jingjun (Li Lexian Media), Fan Ling (TEZIGN), Peng Wu (Gensler), Tang Yu (Archmixing), He Yong (MeetBest), and Zhang Shuo (Sure Design).
Syracuse Architecture B.Arch. students and alumni also played a significant role in the production of this issue, serving as assistant editors. The team includes Sun Furui ’19, Zuo Ying ’19, Li Rui ’21, Luo Chenhao ’23, Zhu Haihui ’23, Zhang Yaqi ’23, Zhuang Yukun ’23, Meng Xinqi ’23, Luo Peiyu ’24, Xue Haotian ’26, and Li Shuoxuan ’26.
The book launch events have taken place in various bookstores in cities across China, including Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, and Ningbo. The publication has garnered positive feedback from both design professionals and the general public.
