Brian Holland is an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Arkansas and the founder of Open Set, a research and design studio working at the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and ecology. With his scholarly and creative practices, he explores alternative frameworks for conceptualizing the architect’s agency in society, while seeking to expand the discipline’s repertoire of theories, tactics, and strategies for working in a relevant and impactful way. Holland’s writings have been featured in Bracket, MONU, and On Site Review, and he is the editor of the book, Architecture and Social Change: Shaping an Impactful Practice (Routledge, 2025). He is also the creator and organizer of the Piggybacking Practices research project, which launched online in 2021 and was exhibited at the European Cultural Centre’s 2023 Venice Architecture Biennial. Holland received his M.Arch from the University of Pennsylvania, his B.Arch from Cal Poly Pomona, and is licensed to practice architecture in California and Arkansas.
