Encoded Loom: Weaving Data and Design
This lecture examines the integration of computational thinking within architecture and textiles, emphasizing data-driven approaches that foster innovative, responsive structures. Hammond will showcase academic projects that translate advanced datasets into compelling design solutions. Additionally, the discussion will trace the journey from architectural studies to product design, underscoring the transformative applications and impact of computational techniques in both educational and professional practice.
Ahearn Workshop: Mapping the Body
February 1-3
Sarah Hammond will be holding an in-person workshop, open only to current students, on February 1-3, that will explore the intersection of physical and digital design for garments tailored to the body in motion. Participants will start with physical garments, transitioning them into the digital 3D space using Clo software. The workflow involves toggling between analog and digital mediums to design apparel for dancers. By the workshop’s conclusion, student groups will have created a custom-designed and constructed leotard or bodysuit, along with animations showcasing their garment in motion, generated through Clo.
The workshop emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, welcoming students from both the School of Architecture and the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA).
Mapping the Body is part of the School of Architecture’s design studio, “Leotard 2.0,” taught by Erin Cuevas, where fashion and architecture students collaborate to create innovative, wearable architectures.
