Information Economy
Information Economy (n.) Information Economy is a post-industrial economy with an economy based on an emphasis on information. This idea flourished as information technology developed. There is less of an emphasis on the object (art) than the information conveyed by it. An object is the tangible result at the end of the system, whereas the information is an intangible open continuing system that continues to spread and influence through networks. 1 Information is the currency to this world where it is the dominant force in terms of decision making and design. This idea of the informational economy is very prominent in our current culture, as we are dependent on the network we establish and the information shared through it. Project Seek designed by Nicholas Negroponte served as a testbed for an “Intelligent Environment” 2. Intelligent environment is when the environment or setting one lives in is dictated by the information the governing being has to control almost anything. The gerbils in the box were controlled by the AI with a mechanized arm. The AI would gather information on how the cubes were affected by the gerbils’ movements and rearranged them to create more interaction between the cubes and the gerbils.
