A team led by our students and advised by Tarek Rakha (PI), Sekou Cooke and David Shanks (Co-PIs), have developed an application over this past Fall in collaboration with the Syracuse Center of Excellence (CoE) for the bi-annual Solar Decathlon hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy. Syracuse University was selected, along with fifteen other collegiate teams, to design and construct a 1,000 ft2 home that demonstrates excellence in sustainable design and superior building performance through solar energy technology integration. The teams will begin a two-year process to raise funds and build solar-powered, highly energy-efficient houses that combine affordability, innovation and design excellence.  Collaborations are currently being planned through curricular work and extra curricular activities to research, design, build, test and transfer the home to the competition’s location (previously held in Washington D.C. and Irvine, CA, current location TBA).
