Associate Professor; Meredith Professor

<synopsis></synopsis>

Jonathan Massey is an architect and historian of modern architecture with a focus on North America during the 19th and 20th centuries. He has chaired the Bachelor of Architecture program and the University Senate, along with several departmental and university committees. With colleagues, Massey co-founded the Transdisciplinary Media Studio, which uses digital media to sponsor new modes of collaborative research, teaching, and learning across disciplines, and worked to establish a new interdisciplinary LGBT Studies program. In 2004 he received a Meredith Teaching Award. Prior to joining the faculty, he practiced and taught in Los Angeles and New York. Massey's research examines the ways architecture mediates power by giving form to civil society, shaping social relationships, and regulating consumption. His book Crystal and Arabesque reconstructed the techniques through which American modernists engaged the new media, audiences, and problems of mass society. His essays have analyzed topics ranging from organicism in modern architecture to mortgage finance and sumptuary regulation, and they include several publications on Buckminster Fuller and the roots of sustainable design. Massey is editor for modern architecture and urbanism at caa.reviews, editor of the Society of Architectural Historians blog, and a member of the Aggregate research collaborative. His current initiatives include curatorial and scholarly work on Marcel Breuer as well as essays and a book about the ways that architecture manages our consumption of resources ranging from energy and water to time, credit, and risk.
