HARDWARE UPGRADES
10 new computers have been ordered to replace the IBM PCs in Slocum 310. Each machine will be equipped with an Intel Pentium III processor running at 800mHz. Each will also have a Zip drive and CD-RW (CD-ROM read and write) drive installed.

The network for the building is being upgraded over the mid-semester break. Capacity will increase from 10mb/second for the entire network to 10mb/second for each machine connected to the network. Given the existing setup of machines, modest improvements to performance should be seen in the machines in Rooms 107 and 109 but significant improvement should be seen in the systems in Room 310.

The second Hewlett Packard HP1055CM has been operating quite successfully this past semester. A problem with the supply of black ink has curtailed operations somewhat in the last weeks of the semester. We are working to resolve the situation but it is a supply problem.

New Epson printer/plotters have been installed in Rooms 107, 109 and 310. Each is capable of plotting at resolutions up to 1440dpi and on paper up to B size (17"x22").

The school has been given a palette of scanners (44 to be exact) which will be installed as soon as they arrive.

HARDWARE UPGRADES
New computers have been installed in Slocum 310 bring the total number to 23.

The Hewlett Packard HP1055CM has been operating quite successfully this past semester. We are contemplating removing the HP600 b&w plotter and the HP750 color plotter and replacing them with a second HP1055.

A new scanner will be added to the systems in Room 310..

SOFTWARE UPGRADES
formZ Renderzone Release 3.1 will be installed on all 23 machines in Room310 and on all 20 machines in Rooms 107 and 109, making 43 systems with formZ running on them.
CURRICULUM NEWS
The freshman course in drawing has been restructured and renamed Representation. The spring semester will become Representation - Digital, beginning with this coming spring 2000 semester. Prof. Richard Jensen will be the lead teacher for the course.

The third year ARC308 studio will be offered as part of this coming spring semester. The studio is located in the center of the third year studios on the third floor. Prof. Jensen will offer the studio. In this studio the students provide their own computer while the studio provides counter space and lockable cabinets for security plus power and network ports at every desk.

HARDWARE UPGRADES
New monitors have been ordered to replace the older 256 color ones in Slocum 310. All monitors in 310 will then be able to display true color.

A new plotter is has been ordered. It is a Hewlet Packard HP1055CM which is a 36 inch color ink jet plotter with significanly increased plotting speed (up to six times faster than our current HP750C), 128mb of ram (compared to the 72mb on the current plotter) and an internal 2gb hard drive making it possible to plot much larger plot files.

Five new computers for Room 310 are being ordered to increase the number of computers available to students.

A new scanner has been ordered to increase the number of scanners available to students.

FACILITIES UPGRADES
One of the 3rd year studios on the 3rd floor has been equipped for CAD. Extensive built in counter space was installed with large lockable storage cabinets below. Additional power has been brought to each drafting station and a network connection is avialable at each station. The computer and software will have to be provided by the student. This is keeping with the stated direction of the school (and the university for that matter) in that the school will continue to maintain and upgrade the existing computer labs but will not build any new ones. It has made a commitment, however, to providing everything "downstream", meaning the network and the output capacity.
