From Prof. Bruce Coleman: To request an account on the NT server in Slocum Hall Room 310 you must
  • be a full time student currently registered in the Syracuse University School of Architecture
  • send an email request to Prof. Bruce Coleman. In the subject of the email state "NT account request" and in the body of the email state your full name, whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student and what year you are in. Only email requests will be honored.
  • Your request for an account will be sent to our technical support group. Most accounts are created on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday mornings.
  • You should receive an email confirmation when your account is ready.
  • Please read the following information carefully. It may answer many of your questions and avoid problems later on.
    Thank you.
ACCESSING YOUR ACCOUNT Your account will be on a server named arch_nt_01. The account will have the same userid as your university (SUnix) email account. The password assigned to you will be your last name, in lower case. Hyphenated names will be combined as one word. For example, my email address is bcoleman@syr.edu

so my account userid would be  bcoleman

and my password would be coleman.

PASSWORDS Please change your password as soon as possible. This is important!!
The most common reason our systems get broken into is someone leaving their password unchanged or sharing their password with someone else.

To change your password,

  • after you have logged on,
  • press ctrl-alt-delete.
  • a dialog box will appear.
  • press the button at the bottom left marked "Change password".
  • be sure that your new password is suitably difficult for someone else to figure out.
  • Do not use your social security number, your birth date, your phone number, your university id number, your street address or any single word in the English language.
  • A good password has both upper and lower case letters, at least one number and at least one punctuation mark. A common method is to take a simple easy to remember phrase and use the first letters. Thus, the phrase "ARC550 is my favorite course" becomes A5imfc!
  • Obsceneties should not be used. Such usuage is considered unprofessional and may result in suspension of computer privileges.
THE SERVER The server is an IBM PC360 with 13gb of high speed disk capacity. The server, the software running on it, the local network to which it is attached, the 3 IBM PC365s and 23 Dells in room 310 are entirely owned and operated by the School of Architecture. Use of these computer resources is a privilege. Abuse of these facilities may result in suspension of your computer access privileges.
ABUSE Abuse of the school's computer systems include, but is not limited, to the following:
  • Using excessive amounts of disk space (over 300mb).
  • Using the computing system to send hate or threatening email.
  • Using the computing system in a way that overloads the network with nonacademically related material, such as downloading video or MP3 files.
  • Camping, meaning occupying a computer for long periods of time while not working on academically related material.
  • Locking a computer system, then leaving it for more than 10 minutes.
  • Tampering with the hardware or software of the computing system.
  • Hacking or attempting to hack the computing network or using the computing system to hack another computer system.
  • Giving your password to another user or asking another user for their password. Every student is entitled to an account so there is no need to use or need another student's password.
  • Changing, deleting, altering, tampering or copying another user's data stored on the system is considered tampering or theft of intellectual property and is an abuse of the system.
  • Changing, deleting, altering or tampering with the operating system, the network system, the server, or any software program installed by the school on the system is an abuse of the system.
  • Installing software on the system is an abuse of the system.

Abuse of the school's computer systems may result in the suspension of access privileges (the temporary or permanent closure of the account) and/or referral to the school's ethics committee.

PROBLEMS See Getting Help.
The School's computer support people are Phillip Bonnevie and Andrew Molloy. They can be reached via email at pdbonnev@syr.edu and awmolloy@syr.edu
KNOW YOUR SOFTWARE The responsibility for knowing the software you use rests with you!
The technical support staff is there to maintain the system, in particular the server, the network and the plotters. They are !not! expected to be experts on all of the software that we run or that you use. Before you use any software for academic purposes, you must be sure that you have enough knowledge to execute the task at hand.
SHARED RESOURCES The NT system is a shared resource. Its primary purpose is to support the teaching of computing. There are not enough computers for everyone!
Any decision to use the school's computers for any assignment, particularly when the use of computing is not a requirement of the course or the assignment, is one that you make on your own! You must take into account the reality of using a shared resource that may not always be there when you want it or may be in use by others. The first rights of use go to those students that are actually taking computing courses.
PLOTTERS The school maintains the following plotters:
  1. 3 - Epson3000 inkjet plotters, individual sheet fed, color, up to 17"x22", and up to 1440dpi.
  2. 2 - HP1055 inkjet plotters, 36" wide roll fed, color, 300 to 600 dpi, high speed.

    Allow plenty of time!!!
There are many people using few machines.
CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON PLOTTING TO THE SCHOOL'S PLOTTERS.
  • Start plotting very very early.
  • Faculty are not going to accept the excuse that "someone else was using the plotter" or "the plotter was broken".
  • Never assume that they are always working, that there is always paper and that there is always ink!
  • Consider using Syracuse Blue Print Co. as a plotting resource. They are located at 825 E. Genesee Street, across from the Syracuse Stage, phone 476-4084.
  • The only paper provided by the school is plain bond paper.
  • Always use the appropriate plotter.
  • Make check plots on the small Epson3000, in black and white.
  • Only use the HP1055 for final plots when size and color are essential.
  • Remove all trimmings and waste paper and place them in the appropriate trash bins.
  • Report any problems to pdbonnev@syr.edu or awmolloy@syr.edu
UNIVERSITY EMAIL ACCOUNTS Note that your email account is on a system that is owned and managed by Syracuse University.
