REQUIRED
The following items are not included and prepaid in the studio/supply fee but are necessary for the course.
The student should either bring these items are be prepared to purchase them locally.
1. A Parallel Rule or a T-Square

A Parallel rule or T-square is necessary for drafting. The T-square is less expensive, but more difficult to use and less precise. By far most architects and architecture students prefer parallel rules. They are a good investment if you plan to pursue architecture or a related field. "Mayline" is a good parallel rule manufacturer but there are a number of others. Their products are available in most art and architecture supply stores. In their original box they can be checked as normal baggage. If so, be sure that the package is securely closed and that your name and address is clearly marked both on the outside and inside of the package.

  • T-square with plastic edges $13.00-$20.00

    or

  • 36-inch Parallel rule about $85.00

    or

  • 42-inch Parallel rule about $95.00

Parallel rules can be purchased over the internet from such companies as Charrette.com or once you get here at the Syracuse University Bookstore. Current price from SUB is $89.00 for the 36" parallel rule and $92.00 for the 42".
Which one to pick? No project we will be working on will require anything larger than the 36" rule can handle. If you think you are serious about continuing on into architecture, however, then the 42" rule is the better choice, and it's only $3.00 more.

2. Drawing Board Cover

  • A smooth drawing surface is required for both drafting and sketching in the studio.
Either a hot press illustration board or a vinyl board cover is suitable for this purpose.
  • Hot press illustration board (white) $ 3.75-$ 5.00
  • 31 -inch x 42-inch vinyl board cover $18.00-$25.00 (clearly more expensive but much better and thus the only one you will see used by students. These can be easily rolled up and removed and thus reused.

3. Tape Measure

25-inch x 1 -inch minimum, metal tape measure. Tapes are available in hardware and building supply stores. Either a plastic or metal case is adequate.

  • 25-foot metal tape measure $10.00-$20.00

Optional
The following items are optional. Some students in the past have found them useful but you can certainly make do without them.
4. Scissors

Students have found an ordinary pair of scissors or shears to be useful.
If you are traveling by air, do not pack these in carry-on baggage.

5. Swing Arm Lamp

An inexpensive lamp with a clamp for a desk is helpful for doing studio work in the evening.

  • Swing arm lamp $15.00-$25.00

6. Screwdrivers

A slot edge screwdriver and a Phillips-head (X head) screwdriver is useful for setting up and breaking down your parallel rule.
Again if you are traveling by air, do not pack these in carry-on baggage.

7. Fan

A small fan, particularly one that can be clipped onto a drafting board, can be nice in the studio.
They are usually made to be clipped onto a headboard or a desk, but it works.

8. Glue gun

We build a lot of models using cardboard, Strathmore board, illustration board, chipboard, or anything we can lay our hands on. Some students find a glue gun useful. Again, don’t pack it in carry on luggage.

Miscellaneous model building supplies, particularly cardboard or chipboard, and additional paper may be needed over the summer. Don't bother trying to bring it. Most can be scavanged for free. Material for final models can be purchase at the Bookstore.
