Friday  February 22, 2002: Exporting AutoCAD files.
  • Save as
  • Export
  • dxf file
  • template file
  • Once drawings are done in AutoCAD, how can they be taken into other programs?
    • Since each stage of a project requires a different array of programs, one must be able to move data from one to another.
    • This is why programs can export and import files.
    • In AutoCAD one has two options; save as… or export.
      • When using "save as…" the file can be written as a .dwg, .dwt (drawing template file), or .dxf (data exchange format).
        • The .dwt essentially strips all visual data, preserving only the preferences; such as layers, colors, line types, frozen layers, ect.
        • The .dxf is essentially ASCII

To prove this, one can save a file as a .dxf, open Word, and this open the .dxf file in Word. By doing this, one can see the entire contents of the database. However, the data has been removed from its various tables
