| ARC550 Advanced Computer Applications in Architecture Assignment 4: MODEL 3, The Red House, Issued
Wednesday March 27, 2002, Due 11:45am Monday April 1, 2002 |
| Data manipulation: This
exercise is intended to be only somewhat more complex than the last. It should take less
than one hour to complete. If you find that it is taking longer than two hours, stop!
For this exercise, set the Snap to On. The default
increment for snap is 2'-0" which is fine for most of this exercise.
Generate a model that has the following elements:
- A red volume, 22' wide, 34' long, 14'
high.
- Change the color of the "roof" to gray. To do this
you will have to set the topological level to Face, select the top surface by clicking on
two of the segments that bound it, click on the Surface Style gray, click on the Color
command (right above the delete trash can) and then click anywhere on the screen.
- Apply a mesh to the roof. Before making the
application set the mesh to be 2' x 2' x 2' in the Tool Options. Triangulate the mesh by
checking the triangulate box. If the mesh is not triangulated, the Boolean operations
later in the exercise will not work!

- You may get a message stating that this operation will
convert the object to Plain and asking if you wish to continue. Answer Yes.
- Distort the mesh using the Disturb command.

- Be sure to constrain the movement of the mesh to only the z
direction by unchecking the X and Y boxes. The amount of the disturbance may be left at
plus or minus 6" or you may change it. If you change it, don't go below 6" or
above 2'.
- Within the volume generate one gray "room" that is
16' x 14' x 12'
- Within the volume generate another gray room that is
cylindrical, 10' in diameter and 8' high.
- Within the volume generate one additional blue room whose
dimensions you set.
- Generate at least one gray door 12' wide by 8' high that
connects the exterior to the large room.
- Generate a door that connects each of the interior rooms.
- Generate a window for each room
- Generate two skylight openings, one for the large room, one
for the cylindrical room.
- Place the entire volume on a gray base or ground that is 4'
thick.
- Create a light fixture. Use either a spherical light source
or a point source. Place it atop a post and locate it outside the "front door".
- Copy the light to make two lights.
- Set five views, all perspectives. two from the inside
looking out and three from the exterior.
- There is no specified arrangement of the rooms.
- Be sure that the object names reflect the type of object,
such as "room 1", "door1", etc.
- Note that it may be easier to generate the rooms outside the
volume and then move them inside it. The method is up to you.
- Be sure that the file is saved onto your zip disk, not on
the server or local hard drive. You may also wish to save a copy of the file in your
directory on the server but that is not essential for the course.
- The preferred method of submission is email. You may also
submit the file on a zip disk. Be sure that the zip disk has a label on it with your name
on it.
- Be sure that the only files on the zip disk are the ones
belonging to this course.
In evaluating this exercise, all points listed above will
be taken into consideration. |
