Basic modeling:

The first modeling exercise is intended to be very very simple. It should only take a few minutes to complete.
If you find that it is taking longer than one hour, stop!

You will note that colors are specified. While it is possible to change the color of something after it has been made, it is easier to set the color of something before you generate it. This is done simply by clicking on the color cube in the surface style palette, in the upper left corner of the graphic window. Once selected, all elements made from then on will have that color. To state this in more precise computer terminology, once you have selected a surface style, it becomes the current value or current default that will determine one of the descriptive attributes of the objects you are about to make. That value will then be entered into the database for the objects made.

For this exercise, set the Snap to On. The default increment for snap is 2'-0" which is fine for this exercise.
Generate a model that has the following elements:

  1. A blue wall with at least three sections or segments to it, 1'-0" thick (that is the default) and 14'-0" high.
  2. A red cube with a height of 10'-0"
  3. A green cone with a height of 16'-0"
  4. A yellow cylinder with a diameter of 12'-0" and a height of 8'-0"
  5. A purple torus
  6. An orange sphere of any diameter.
  7. Place all of the objects on a light gray "table" that is -2'-0".
  1. There is no specified arrangement of the objects although they should be descrete, that is, they should not touch or overlap each other.
  2. Be sure that the object names reflect the type of object, such as "wall", "cube", "cone", etc.
  3. Save the file with the name:  youruserid.550.assignment2
FormZ will automatically attach the extension  .fmz
For example, when saved, mine would be bcoleman.550.assignment2.fmz
  4. Email me the file or turn it in on a zip disk.
  5. If you use a zip disk, be sure that the file is saved onto your zip disk, not on the server or local hard drive.
You may also wish to save a copy of the file in your directory on the server but that is not essential for the course.
  6. Be sure that the zip disk has a label on it with you name on it.
  7. Be sure that the only file on the zip disk in the one titled Model1

In evaluating this exercise, all listed points above will be taken into account.
