To move a file from one system to another, the most common program used is called "ftp" for File Transfer Protocol. The most basic version is a command based version. A graphic based version is called WS_ftp or WS_ftp32.exe. All systems in Slocum 310 have this installed. To see if the system you are using has this program on it,
  • click on the Start button at the bottom right corner of the screen,
  • click on Find,
  • and select Files.
  • A dialogue box will open.
  • By "named", type WS_ftp and by "look in" select My Computer.
  • Look at the list produced.
  • Under the Type column, look for Application.
  • If you find it, click on the icon to launch the program.
  • It will look something like this:
  • wsftp.login.gif (5057 bytes)
  • Under User ID fill in your userid
  • Under Password fill in your password
  • You may elect to have the software save your password
  • Click OK
  • The next screen will look like this:
  • wsftp.gif (15230 bytes)
  • On the left is the local system, the one you are working at
  • On the right is the remote system you have connected to, in this case a home directory on rodan.
  • Note that you can change directories (folders) on either the local or remote system
  • Note that you can make directories (folders) on either the local or remote system
  • Note that you can remove directories on either the local or remote system.
  • You can also rename and delete individual files.
  • You can select one file at a time or use the cursor and sweep multiple files to select them on the system from which you want them copied. Note that this is a copying process.
  • By simply clicking on the appropriate arrow you will direct the program to copy the files from one system to the other.
Syracuse university provides instructions form using anonymous ftp, the command based version at:

http://cms.syr.edu/sunix/ftp.html

A graphic image and instructions (similar to those above) are provided at the SU web page:

If you are working from your own computer, do not have ws_ftp and would like to get it, a shareware version is available for free at:
